Earthquakes in Bali Explored 2022

February 1, 2022 by winik Leave a Comment

Traveling to Bali or any of Indonesia’s other islands is never without danger and predicting earthquakes in Bali is not a perfect science, which is why disaster planning in Indonesia is still important to save lives.

Even though disasters happen often in Indonesia, there are many differences in how each region plans for them. So, poor planning for earthquakes and other natural disasters can kill hundreds or even thousands of people, even in places that haven’t had many of these kinds of things happen before.

As you can see below, Indonesia’s geographic location puts them in one of the most vulnerable locations to natural disasters, with earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions occurring on a regular basis.

Experts predict that in the next few decades, a massive earthquake will strike Indonesia’s Sumatra Island, which sits atop a long subsea fault. So, it’s important to know what to look out for in the event of a natural catastrophe.

Several earthquakes have occurred in the area as a result of the Sunda megathrust, a segment of the fault, rupturing on multiple occasions over the past decade.

So, again, people in Indonesia who live in dangerous areas should know that the next big earthquake and tsunami are likely to strike.

When it comes to major earthquakes in Bali, Indonesians, including the director of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency’s Earthquake Center in Jakarta, are unsure when one may strike—it might be tomorrow, next year, or in five years.

Can earthquakes in Bali be predicted?

No, it’s never happened. No government or group of experts has ever been able to predict a big earthquake. No one knows how, and we don’t think we’ll find out soon. Scientists can only say how likely it is that a big earthquake will happen somewhere in a certain number of years.

Earthquakes in Bali can strike at any time of year, as well as at any hour of the day or night.
Earthquakes in Bali can strike in any weather—dry season, wet season, or with no particular pattern.

Sources say that Indonesia has more than 1,000 earthquakes every year, but not all of them may be felt in Bali. When an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 or higher hits without warning, the economy falls apart, people’s lives are ruined, and countries are crushed.

But in 2004, a large tsunami and a 9.1-magnitude earthquake happened off the coast of Sumatra, killing almost 230,000 people.

In 2018, a massive earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Lombok, followed by a series of aftershocks over the next several weeks, killing over 550 people on the tourist island and nearby Sumbawa.

Later that year, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake and the resulting tsunami in Palu, on the island of Sulawesi, killed or left over 4,300 people dead or missing.

On December 22, 2018, a massive tsunami devastated the Sunda Strait in Indonesia, killing 437 people and injuring thousands more along the coasts of western Java and southern Sumatra. Indonesia. Members of the Indonesian band “Seventeen” are carried away by tsunami waves in the video above; two were never found, and the vocalist’s wife was also killed.

Because the landslide did not produce significant short-period seismic waves, no tsunami warning was issued as a result of the ground shaking.

How do I protect myself and my family from tsunamis and earthquakes in Bali?

Strong earthquakes on other islands might not be felt in Bali. Because of this, it’s important to sign up for any kind of wireless emergency alert, since there aren’t many ways to get tsunami warnings.

If you’re at the beach, be aware of nature’s tsunami warning signs, which include earth tremors, a loud ocean roar, and water receding unnaturally far, exposing the seabed. If you encounter any of these warning signs, immediately move to higher ground or inland.

A tsunami may strike in minutes, with devastating surges lasting at least 12 hours or more. Stay away from the coast until officials give you permission to return.

People who are in a building, parking garage, house, or hotel that is unsafe should leave right away and go to an open area away from other buildings. Again, don’t expect hotel or shopping center workers to help you because they’ll be scared. Find higher ground away from houses, trees, and other things that could get in the way.
