Dr. Ketut Suarjaya, the head of the Bali Provincial Health Office, indicated on Thursday, January 6th, that “the third immunization or booster jabs for Bali is right around the corner,” with the date set for January 12, 2022.
The Omicron variant, which has reportedly infected over 150 people in Indonesia, the bulk of whom have traveled outside the country, including a 37-year-old male from North Sumatra. The Sumatran told authorities that he did not travel overseas or have contact with international travelers prior to taking a swab PCR test on December 20th. The Genomik Solidaritas Indonesia lab would later confirm the Omicron variant on December 26.
Since then, many Indonesian citizens and expats have questions surrounding Omicron—whether it is more transmissible, is it immune-evading, does it cause different diseases, and whether we need to take any special measures to combat it.
However, everyone is still learning about the variant, nobody has solid answers to most of these questions.
The rapid spread of Omicron and the associated spike in COVID-19 cases in many countries suggests that the variant may be more transmissible. This concept is supported by studies that show the variant is more infectious and has a shorter incubation period (the time between infection and the start of being contagious) than Delta. However, the rapid rise in Omicron cases may also be due to its ability to evade the protection of vaccine or infection-induced immunity.

Meanwhile, in Bali, booster injections will be provided at no cost to the elderly and at-risk recipients of the PBI BPJS social assistance program before being made available to the public.
It’s unclear when this will happen, and unlike their initial two doses, these booster shots may not be free. The government has yet to issue an official price list for the many vaccinations that are offered.
UPDATE: More than 802 new cases have been reported in Indonesia since the Omicron variant’s emergence, the largest number in over three months. According to senior cabinet minister Luhut Panjaitan, those figures may peak in February. As a result, President Joko Wido declared the booster rollout, which will include Sinovac, Astra Zeneca, Pfizer, and Zifivax vaccines, to be free.

Luhut B Pandjaitan, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, has changed the necessary quarantine period for overseas travelers arriving in Indonesia after receiving the third dosage.
For both foreigners and Indonesian nationals who have received their third dose of the Covid-19 vaccination booster, the quarantine period would be three days.
The PCR exit test is performed on the morning of the third day, under the condition that travelers perform PCR entry-and-exit tests. Travelers are allowed to continue their journey once everything has been approved and the findings have come back negative.
Those who have completed their quarantine should also receive an independent PCR test on the fifth day, according to authorities.
