On December 29, 2021, Indonesian football fans had just finished watching their beloved team lose 0-4 against Thailand in the first leg of the 2020 AFF Cup final in Singapore’s National Stadium. What happened next shocked the nation.
After the stunning defeat, hackers defaced the PSSI Indonesia Football Associations webpage (www.pssi.org). These are typically the work of defacers, or hackers who break into a web server and replace the hosted website with one of their own.
In this case, the PSSI’s home page was replaced with the message, Ayo…Tetap Semangat di Laga Kedua (Come on… Keep on the Spirit for the Second Leg).
The site on the “Kabar Bola” channel was infiltrated by hackers under the alias of Anon7 and the AnonSec Team.
The defaced page also featured a poster showing PSSI’s chairman Mochamad Iriawan with his face crossed out, saying,”Indonesia mainnya bapuk apa karena ketum pssi masuk kamar ganti pemain? Yok indonesia bisa yok, masih ada leg 2, semangat! #opiwan #indonesiajuara“. (Why did Indonesia play poorly, was it because the Head of PSSI entered the players’ locker room? Come on Indonesia you still can win it, there is still the second leg, Keep the spirit up!
In addition, there was news about the match results and a downloadable link to the song, “Garuda di Dadaku.”
After a night of defacement, PSSI Indonesia Football was able to regain control in the morning. However, it’s unclear why someone would want to get into their computer systems. Yes, they have been in charge of football in Indonesia since 1930, a full 15 years before the nation gained its independence.
Widespread belief is that all hackers engage in illegal activity, this is not the case. There are hackers that use their skills for the good of mankind, despite the fact that many of them are known to breach computer systems and do massive damage simply for entertainment, financial gain, or other causes.
Black hat hackers, often known as crackers, are people who use their skills for criminal activities, whereas white hat hackers are those who operate ethically. A white hat hacker may be an employee of a data recovery firm who helps them retrieve lost information.
Maybe PSSI Indonesia football trusted someone enough to provide them access to their network or computers which in turn became a much bigger security risk. Whether these hackers were ever granted access or not, or whether PSSIs system was hacked with the intent to steal, alter, or destroy data, or maybe secretly install malicious software.
Nevertheless, hackers, armed with extensive technological expertise, may use several covert methods to gain unauthorized access to almost any sensitive data. On the other hand, these hackers made a point of being careless.
Several hackers have gained notoriety since the birth of the internet by either wreaking havoc on the systems of others or creating groundbreaking new computer technology.
In this instance, someone was upset and retaliated in a manner that got attention, making them considerably more well-known for a minute; traces of this event may still be seen all over the internet through stories.
And in the end, Thailand won the tournament by a 6–2 victory in the two-legged final against Indonesia to secure their sixth title.
